Who’s It For

Very few golfers have traditional long irons in their bags anymore. In terms of replacing those clubs, however, utility irons have joined hybrids in recent years as a more and more popular option. Srixon has long been a category leader when it comes to the utility iron, both with touring professionals and recreational players. The new Z U85 utility irons are likely to continue that trend, as they will provide golfers with the ball speed, distance, launch, and forgiveness that most hybrids provide combined with the enhanced workability that a traditional long iron would offer, which is a great combination for low- and mid-handicap players.

The Tech Story

Driving the performance of Srixon’s new Z U85 utility irons is their hollow body design, as this construction approach allows weight to be pushed low in the clubhead and to its perimeter to create high launch conditions and improved results on off-center strikes. The hollow body also allows for a thinner, more flexible clubface, which enabled engineers to use a high-strength SUP10 face to create faster ball speeds and more distance. That said, the body of the Z U85 utility irons has been forged from soft 1020 carbon steel to offer exceptional sound and feel at impact. Additionally, the iron-like profile gives players the look they want at address but also the straight face they need to shape shots and control trajectory. Z U85 utility irons are being offered in five different lofts ranging from 18 to 29 degrees and with the UST Recoil 95 graphite shaft as a stock option.

Srixon 2018 Z series iron Review

2nd Swing recently traveled to Southern California to meet with Srixon Golf Director of Marketing Brian Schielke to learn more about Srixon 2018 Z series irons, which include the Z 785 and Z 585 irons, as well as the Z U85 utility irons. All three models are forged to offer exceptional feel and each features more compact shaping to appeal to players visually. The Z 785 is a true players cavity back that offers impressive forgiveness for an iron of its size, while the Z 585 is a players distance iron that is known for amazing ball speed in a classic, compact shape. And finally, the hollow Z U85 utility irons offer hybrid-like performance with iron-like workability and will be a great long iron replacement in the bags of a wide array of players.
