Tips For Beginners Buying Golf Equipment
Tips For Beginners Buying Golf Equipment
March 03, 2021
As more and more people begin playing golf, it’s important that those individuals are educated on what equipment is right for them.
Many beginners may think that any old set of clubs will work for them since, you know, they’re not so good yet anyway.
However, it might be more important for beginners to get the right set of clubs than anyone. If beginners don’t start off on the right foot in terms of the equipment, this cruel game can provide a rude awakening.
With all of that said, 2nd Swing fitter Paul Suralski offered up his advice after working with hundreds of beginners and helping them enjoy golf from the onset. His first piece of advice is that beginner golfers should play the most forgiving clubs they can.
“There’s easier-to-hit and more forgiving clubs out there, especially in the irons,” Suralski says. “You don’t have to be as precise hitting it on the center of the face to get the most consistency out of the clubs. They’re designed to help launch the ball into the air easier and more effectively.”
Another piece of advice Suralski suggests is choosing woods and hybrids with more loft. In many cases, beginner golfers struggle to get the ball off the turf, and this can especially be true with fairway woods and hybrids.
“That extra loft just makes it a lot easier to get the most distance out of your shots and out of your swing,” Suralski says. “Sometimes for beginners, even if they make perfect contact, a lower-lofted wood doesn’t lift the ball into the air enough, which leaves distance out there that could be achieved with a higher loft.”
This doesn’t have to be just about golf clubs, either. While playing the correct golf ball is certainly key to producing the best results, Suralski emphasizes playing the same ball every time, rather than switching each round or perhaps in the middle of a round.
“Whether it’s an expensive or inexpensive ball, the big thing is that you play the same ball,” Suralski says. “Then you know what to expect on each shot in terms of feel and spin. This is a great way to build consistency early on.”
And of course, as is the case with any golfer, getting fit at 2nd Swing is of the utmost importance to make sure the golf swing is optimized to its full potential through the equipment. Fittings at 2nd Swing are free with purchase, and our experts are trained and certified to fit all skill levels.
Additionally, golfers on any budget will find options for their swing. 2nd Swing’s inventory of both new and used clubs is the largest in the industry and covers all budget ranges.
“When the clubs are fit for you in terms of shaft flex, shaft length, lie angle, and all of those things, it’s much easier to learn how to swing,” Suralski says. “Golf is much easier when the clubs are working with you instead of against you.”
