The U.S. Open returns to Pinehurst No. 2 this week for the fourth time in history. Pinehurst is one of the most well known courses in the country, and is consistenly ranked among the best courses open to the public in the U.S. It's also the only golf course to have hosted all five of the USGA's most prestigious events: U.S. Open (1999, 2005, 2014), U.S. Women's Open (2014), U.S. Amateur (1962, 2008, 2019), U.S. Women's Amateur (1989), and U.S. Senior Open (1994).

With the U.S. Open returning to Pinehurst for the fourth time this week, we thought we'd take a look back at the previous winners, and what clubs they had in their U.S. Open winning bag.

Payne Stewart (1999 U.S. Open Champion)

Payne Stewart captured his 3rd major championship and 2nd U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in 1999. Stewart held off the likes of Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods during his victory, and capped off his win with a dramatic par save on the 72nd hole, leading to his iconic winning pose following the put that is forever immortalized at Pinehurst. Of the three previous U.S. Open winners, Stewart definitely has the best mix of brands throughout his winning bag.

Michael Campbell (2005 U.S. Open Champion)

Michael Campbell may be the most unexpected U.S. Open Champion among the three previous winners at Pinehurst, but nevertheless the New Zealand native held off Tiger Woods with a 1-under 69 in the final round to capture the 2005 U.S. Open. Campbell was a Callaway staffer during his win at Pinehurst and played a bag completely made of Callaway clubs.

Martin Kaymer (2014 U.S. Open Champion)

While Stewart and Campbell's wins came by the narrowest of margins, Martin Kaymer absoultely dominated the field, and the recently renovated Pinehurst No. 2 en route to his 2nd Major Championship and first U.S. Open. Kaymer became the 7th different player to win the U.S. Open in wire-to-wire fashion joining Walter Hagen (1914), Jim Barnes (1921), Ben Hogan (1953), Tony Jacklin (1970, Tiger Woods (2000, 2002), and Rory McIlroy (2011). Kaymer was a TaylorMade staffer at the time of his U.S. Open win and all but one club in his bag was from TaylorMade.
