Standing on TPC Harding Park’s 16th tee on Sunday at the PGA Championship in August 2020, Collin Morikawa held a slim one-stroke lead. To win his first major championship, he would need to produce a heroic shot to close the door on the many chasers around him. He pulled out his 8.5-degree SIM Driver and hit a bullet cut that settled seven feet from the hole. Morikawa converted his eagle, which allowed him to cruise to a three-shot victory.

At the year’s final major, the first Masters in history held in November, Dustin Johnson also armed himself with SIM technology. Johnson fearlessly unleashed missiles off the tee all week with his 10-degree SIM Driver, and the eventual champion broke the tournament scoring record with rounds of 65-70-65-68.

While TaylorMade released their SIM2 line of products not long after Johnson received his green jacket, it is worth noting that the original SIM line helped produce some of golf’s most spectacular shots in recent memory.

TaylorMade’s SIM, which stands for Shape in Motion, drivers feature revolutionary asymmetric sole designs with impressive aerodynamics designed to increase swing speed. The standard SIM driver features a sliding weight on the sole and a more compact shape, which will work best for golfers looking for lower spin or added adjustability from their driver.

The SIM Max Driver features a larger footprint that may appeal to golfers looking to emphasize forgiveness. While boasting much of the same technology found in the SIM Driver, the SIM Max is ideal for mid-to-higher handicap golfers. Lastly, the SIM Max D-Type Driver offers all the benefits of the SIM Max driver in a draw-biased package.

TaylorMade’s SIM family also includes three different fairway wood options. First, the SIM Max Fairway Wood features a deep footprint that will generate explosive distance with high MOI and excellent forgiveness. Its counterpart, the SIM Max D-Type Fairway Wood, sports a draw-biased design to help golfers who struggle with a slice or block.

Finally, the SIM Ti Fairway Wood offers a more compact shape with a titanium clubface that produces lower spin and allows more workability for high-speed, lower-handicap golfers.

The SIM Max Rescue is the SIM family’s lone hybrid option. Numerous technologies work together to give the SIM Max Rescue a high launch, explosive distance, and easy playability. The club is a great option for golfers searching for a replacement for long irons in their bags.

Many golfers turn to prior-generation clubs to find a good deal and expect to experience a drop in quality relative to the newest equipment produced by manufacturers. However, in the case of TaylorMade’s original SIM line, these prior-generation clubs helped the world’s best players win some of the game’s biggest titles as recently as six months ago.
