The introduction of Flash Face technology in the Callaway Epic Flash drivers will benefit golfers of all skill levels and swing types. Its unique design enhances ball speed and MOI in a variety of different ways, while maintaining customization in the form of Callaway’s proven Adjustable Perimeter Weighting. Specifically, golfers who are searching for more distance and already maintain an average or low spin rate will be satisfied with the Callaway Epic Flash driver. However, golfers who want the technological benefits the Epic Flash offers and need a decrease in spin rate should take a look at Callaway’s Epic Flash Sub Zero driver.
The Tech Story
The technology included in Callaway’s Epic Flash drivers is truly unprecedented. Flash Face, Callaway’s brand new innovation, consists of dozens of random subtle ripples flowing from heel to toe that work together to cohesively elevate COR in the face’s center region. The result is a significant boost in ball speed, especially on solid strikes, for a noticeable distance increase. Flash Face was created using Artificial Intelligence, the first known instance of A.I. in the golf equipment industry, and “Machine Learning,” a field of computer science that uses statistical techniques to give computer systems the ability to “learn” with data without being explicitly programmed. Typically, a new driver face will take anywhere from five to 10 prototypes before a decision is made on a final concept. Through A.I. and Machine Learning, however, Callaway’s computers cycled through 15,000 face architecture iterations, learning from each one, before arriving at Flash Face. The inner side of Flash Face is forged from a special titanium heat-treated at 595 degrees Celsius (1100 degrees Fahrenheit) for two hours to create a face that combines a low modulus measurement for excellent flexibility, strength, and speed. Returning from past Callaway driver series is Jailbreak technology, which contains two internal hourglass-shaped bars that connect the crown and the sole. This stiffens those two parts at impact for more stability and ball speed at once. The Epic Flash also incorporates a new triaxial carbon fabric, T2C, which has a tighter weave that allows for more optimal weight distribution for higher MOI and increased accuracy on off-center strikes. Lastly, Callaway’s Adjustable Perimeter Weighting (APW) includes a 16-gram sliding weight that can be easily positioned anywhere on the built-in track at the rear of the clubhead to promote draws, fades, or neutral trajectories.
Quotable
“We couldn’t have come up with Flash Face using conventional engineering principles,” said Dr. Alan Hocknell, senior vice president of Callaway R&D. “We wouldn’t have gone in this direction without A.I. because it’s non-intuitive compared to previous face technologies, including our own VFT and X-Face. The wave configuration isn’t symmetrical, nor does the pattern seem logical. Yet the ripples work together in a complex manner to maximize ball speed. There’s never been anything like Flash Face before in golf equipment, and the effect on performance is intense.”
