Callaway EPIC Flash Sub Zero Driver
Who’s It For?
The Epic Flash Sub Zero driver includes all of the latest innovations from Callaway, including Flash Face technology, which has taken ball speed to levels never reached before from Callaway products. Its unique design also maintains customization in the form of Callaway’s proven Adjustable Perimeter Weighting. Golfers who struggle with a trajectory off the tee that is either too high or frequently spins off line should take a serious look at the Epic Flash Sub Zero driver. However, golfers who maintain an average or low spin rate would likely be better off with the standard Epic Flash driver.
The Tech Story
The marquee feature in the Epic Flash Sub Zero driver is Flash Face, Callaway’s brand new technology that incorporates an entirely new method of architecture to give golfers a remarkably hot face and delivers distance-enhancing ball speed in the face’s center region. Flash Face was created using Artificial Intelligence, the first known instance of A.I. in the golf industry. With the help of Machine Learning technology, 15,000 face architecture iterations were created before Callaway’s computers arrived at Flash Face. Inside Flash Face, dozens of subtle ripples flowing from heel to toe elevate COR in the face’s center region, resulting in a noticeable increase in distance. The distinctive topography on the inner side of the Flash Face is forged from a special titanium and heated at 595° Celsius (1100° Fahrenheit) for two hours to create the combination of flexibility, strength, and speed at impact. The Epic Flash Sub Zero driver also features Callaway’s trademark Jailbreak technology, which integrates two vertical, hourglass-shaped bars within the head to effectively stiffen the crown and sole at impact, subjecting the face to great impact-load to promote more ball speed. Together, Flash Face and Jailbreak turn the face into an incredibly powerful tool for increasing distance. Additionally, to promote lower spin rates, a visible weight is embedded forward in the sole to pull the CG lower and forward without sacrificing MOI. Callaway’s Adjustable Perimeter Weighting (APW) is also present on the Epic Flash Sub Zero driver, the first time APW has been installed in a Sub Zero driver. Due to extra weight moved forward to decrease spin rates, the sliding weight on the Epic Flash Sub Zero driver is 12 grams (compared to 16 grams on the standard Epic Flash), but can still be moved throughout the built-in track to promote draw, fade or neutral flight trajectories.
Quotable
“The Epic Flash Sub Zero driver is an extraordinary club,” said Evan Gibbs, Director of R&D for Woods at Callaway. “Flash Face is a genuine ball speed innovation, and so is Jailbreak. Putting APW in a Sub Zero driver for the first time is a huge accomplishment. And it retains the rare combination of low spin and high MOI that have made our Sub Zero drivers so popular. We’re confident that a lot of golfers are going to hit longer drives than they ever have before with this club.”
