Callaway’s XR 16 driver was built players of all handicaps, but middle and higher handicaps will see the biggest gains by switching to this driver. Callaway worked hard to design a driver that combined speed and forgiveness, and with only a few swings it will be apparent that the company succeeded. Less emphasis was placed on improving workability, however, so players seeking that should look to Callaway’s XR 16 Pro driver. But any golfer, especially those with a middle and higher handicap, who is searching for longer and straighter drives will find them using the Callaway XR 16 driver.
The Tech Story
Callaway’s engineers worked closely with aerodynamics experts at Boeing to create a driver design that could reach a whole new level of speed thanks to reduced drag. To accomplish this, Callaway optimized the size and placement of their Speed Step technology to reduce weight and add more speed. The company also managed to shift the club’s center of gravity lower and deeper, which creates a large amount of forgiveness to increase performance on off-center strikes. Finally, Callaway installed their R-MOTO face technology that is 19 percent lighter and thinner than the clubhead faces of previous models. This excess weight was redistributed around the rest of the club to further increase forgiveness by increasing the driver’s MOI.
