The Mizuno JPX 919 Forged irons would best be described as a players distance iron. They have the classic shaping and more minimal offset that better players want to see at address, but they have also been infused with technology that promotes faster ball speeds and more distance. All that said, it’s a good bet that the JPX 919 Forged irons will appeal to a wide array of players, ranging from low single digit handicappers to those with handicaps in the mid teens. For those players, however, who don’t need added distance and instead are looking for precision and workability, the JPX 919 Tour irons would also warrant serious consideration.
The Tech Story
Fueling the aforementioned ball speeds that the Mizuno JPX 919 Forged irons produce is a construction process that features a fully CNC milled clubface, which has multiple advantages. The milling allows for a larger portion of the clubface to be made strategically thinner to promote faster ball speeds, while also allowing engineers to move the weight that was saved by utilizing a thinner face lower and deeper in the clubhead to improve launch and increase MOI with the long and mid irons. Also unique to the JPX 919 Forged irons is a small amount of high-strength boron that has been utilized in the design to further help create added ball speed, while a new Stability Frame has been implemented in the construction of the clubhead to provide optimal launch conditions and prevent twisting at impact to deliver improved dispersion on off-center strikes. Players can also expect trademark Mizuno feel and acoustics given that the JPX 919 Forged irons have been forged from a single billet of soft 1025B carbon steel, and their chrome plating features a new, more durable Pearl finish to deliver improved resistance to wear and an elegant look at address.

Quotable
“A deeper, wider milling across the back of the face makes the JPX 919 Forged able to transfer more energy to the ball than previous Grain Flow Forged irons. None of that would have been possible without that small addition of boron into our steel billets, which gives that additional strength needed to reinforce the face.” -- David Llewellyn, Mizuno Golf Director of Golf R&D
