The JPX 919 Hot Metal irons from Mizuno are a unique offering in the marketplace. Significant technology has been incorporated into the construction process to give golfers an impressive combination of high launch, impressive ball speed, and significant forgiveness on mis-hits. That said, JPX 919 Hot Metal irons still feature the clean, classic shape and exceptional feel that Mizuno has long been known for. These are irons that will work well for mid- and high-handicap players, but they will also appear to some lower-handicappers who could use an infusion of distance into their game. For those, however, who are less concerned with distance and more concerned with control and shot-shaping ability, the JPX 919 Tour or Forged irons would likely prove to be a better option.
The Tech Story
Where the Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal irons excel is in terms of ball speed, and there are some key technologies that promote that performance attribute. First, Mizuno is using high-strength Chromoly 4140M in the design process, a material that is extremely flexible and resilient. The Chromoly along with a seamless Cup Face construction combine to produce a clubface that flexes more at impact from a larger portion of the face to provide fast ball speeds and a crisp, responsive feel at impact. Additionally, a new Stability Frame is open at the heel portion of the iron to promote high launch and prevent twisting at impact to produce improved accuracy on shots struck from the heel or toe. The short irons and wedges in the JPX 919 Hot Metal set have been made more compact when compared to the JPX 900 Hot Metal irons to improve control on shorter shots, and engineers have also implemented new sound ribs to provide improved feel and acoustics at impact. And finally, a new, more durable Pearl finish has been utilized on the chrome plating to offer improved resistance to wear and an elegant look at address.

Quotable
“The most impressive thing about the JPX 919 Hot Metal is the launch control and flight apex – the extra ball speed and distance doesn’t come from low flying bullets. We work the design backwards from the correct landing angles. These are irons for the golf course, not just the launch monitor.” -- Chris Voshall, Mizuno Golf Senior Engineer
