Who’s It For?

With the M5 and M6 irons, TaylorMade introduced the all new Speed Bridge technology, which stabilizes the iron from top to bottom for maximum forgiveness and superb feel. TaylorMade used extensive computation modeling research to create a design that utilizes minimal mass to stabilize the exact vibration location at impact. The M5 irons are a game-improvement design made for a more competitive golfer than the M6. Highly-skilled golfers will want to try a version of TaylorMade’s P700 iron sets, while players searching for more forgiveness and easier launch will likely prefer the M6 irons.

The Tech Story

The marquee advancement in the M5 and M6 irons is Speed Bridge technology. The Speed Bridge is a strong bar that runs over the cavity back of the iron and connects the topline with the back bar of the iron. This connection stabilizes the iron by supporting the topline and upper face area at the exact location that vibrates at impact. The Speed Bridge also allowed TaylorMade to create the thru-slot Speed Pocket, which improves face flexing over previous TaylorMade game improvement irons. The Speed Bridge and the thru-slot Speed Pocket work together to shift the point of maximum deflection lower on the face for extreme flexibility and forgiveness across the entire hitting zone. Feel is softened by the HYBRAR compression damper, which is aligned with the lower deflection point to decrease undesired vibrations more efficiently. The M5 irons feature a smaller profile and a thinner topline than the M6, which results in more workability and precision. The M5 sole also has a chamfer along the leading edge for smoother turf interaction and, therefore, crisper ball striking. Additionally, tungsten weighting has been fused into the lower toe sections of the 4-7 irons for added forgiveness and easier launch from the long irons while maintaining the precision in the shorter irons.

TaylorMade M5/M6 Iron Review

2nd Swing caught up with TaylorMade Product Manufacturing Engineer Matt Bovee at TaylorMade headquarters in Carlsbad, California to learn more about the new M5 and M6 irons. Most notable about both new irons is the use of what TaylorMade is calling Speed Bridge, a new structure that works in unison with a redesigned Speed Pocket to deliver explosive distance and launch, as well as improved sound and feel in a game-improvement iron. Of the two models, the M5 will have the more compact shape and offer more workability, while the M6 was designed for high launch and max forgiveness.
