Who’s It For?

TaylorMade’s Speed Bridge technology in the new M5 and M6 irons represents a breakthrough design of game improvement irons. The Speed Bridge connects the topline with the back bar to stabilize the unwanted vibrations that occur at impact, whether contact is made in the center of the face or not, and optimize forgiveness due to enhanced face flexing. The M6 irons are specifically created for mid- to high-handicap golfers searching for more distance and higher launch out of their irons. Mid- to low-handicap golfers who prefer a smaller address profile may be better suited for the M5 irons.

The Tech Story

TaylorMade claims that the M6 irons are, “TaylorMade’s newest and most advanced game improvement iron to date.” The M6 irons contain the most revolutionary combination of speed-enhancing iron technologies in the golf industry. The new Speed Bridge, which is a strong bar that connects and supports both the topline and the back bar, reduces vibrations across the entire hitting area and stabilizes the face at impact for increased forgiveness. The Speed Bridge design allows for the thru-slot Speed Pocket to be inserted in the cavity to generate more ball speed. The thru-slot Speed Pocket and Speed Bridge work together to shift the point of maximum deflection to lower on the face for extreme flexibility, forgiveness, and distance. Inverted Cone Technology is also included in the M6 irons, which maximizes the sweet spot and promotes straighter shots on off-center hits. An advanced HYBRAR compression damper will diminish vibrations even further for a solid feel on all shots. The key difference in comparison to the M5 irons is that the M6 irons offer a wider sole and an unsupported bottom of the face, which reduces spin for more distance but less workability than the M5 irons.

Quotable

“At TaylorMade, we have always strived to push the performance envelope to give players maximum distance and forgiveness in our game improvement irons. Our new Speed Bridge technology allows us to do exactly that while improving sound and feel at the same time. Distance has never felt as good as it does with the M6 irons.” -- Matt Bovee, TaylorMade Senior Manager of Product Creation.

TaylorMade M5/M6 Iron Review

2nd Swing caught up with TaylorMade Product Manufacturing Engineer Matt Bovee at TaylorMade headquarters in Carlsbad, California to learn more about the new M5 and M6 irons. Most notable about both new irons is the use of what TaylorMade is calling Speed Bridge, a new structure that works in unison with a redesigned Speed Pocket to deliver explosive distance and launch, as well as improved sound and feel in a game-improvement iron. Of the two models, the M5 will have the more compact shape and offer more workability, while the M6 was designed for high launch and max forgiveness.
