Who’s It For?

The brand new Apex 19 iron set is what Callaway calls, “the ultimate forged players distance iron.” The newest Apex irons come from an exceptional multi-piece construction that lives up to the high standard that Callaway has set for its Apex products. These irons include innovative ball speed technology, specifically Callaway’s 360 Face Cup technology, rarely seen in a forged iron. Low-handicap golfers seeking more distance from their irons will enjoy the Apex 19 irons. Golfers in search of more forgiveness and playability from their irons will likely find the 2019 Big Bertha irons as a more suitable iron set. Meanwhile, highly-skilled golfers who want a more Tour-influenced design with increased workability may prefer the Apex Pro 19 irons. The Apex 19 Smoke irons are also an option for players who prefer a grey smoke finish instead of the Apex 19’s chrome look.

The Tech Story

The staple of Callaway’s latest series of Apex irons is high ball speed and distance with the longer irons and control with the shorter irons. The Apex 19 irons achieve their exceptional distance through Callaway’s 360 Face Cup technology. It employs a shallow, flexible rim around the perimeter of the face that flexes and releases at impact to promote fast ball speed on center and off-center strikes for consistent distance all across the impact zone. The shorter irons also include a spin control VFT face for increased shot-making from scoring clubs. Callaway’s tungsten weighting allows for unique positioning of the CG location in each iron while maintaining the flexibility of 360 Face Cup technology throughout the multi-material construction. These irons also boast extremely soft feel thanks to a forged 1025 mild carbon steel body and proprietary urethane microspheres. The urethane microspheres contain over one million tiny air pockets that absorb unwanted vibrations without slowing down the face, producing the aforementioned extremely soft feel.

Callaway 2019 Apex, Apex Pro Iron Review

2nd Swing recently traveled to Carlsbad, California to meet with Callaway Senior Director of Brand Management Dave Neville to find out more more about the 2019 Callaway Apex and Apex Pro irons. Both models were designed with better players in mind and were forged from soft 1025 carbon steel to offer premium feel. They also both feature distance-enhancing technology, but of the two the Apex Pro will offer a more compact profile and increased workability, while the Apex will deliver more forgiveness on off-center strikes.
