Mizuno has earned a prestigious reputation for constructing exceptional forged irons. The MP line, specifically, has always delivered in the feel and workability departments. The MP-20 irons continue this trend of excellence from Mizuno. The MP-20 MB irons are a true muscle back construction that is based on the best Mizuno blade models of the past and features a compact clubhead design with thin toplines and narrow soles, a construction that will best suit elite ball strikers.
The Tech Story
The MP-20 MB irons have been designed to produce the look, feel, and workability that is desired by the best ball strikers in the world. To achieve this, Mizuno engineers looked to their most revered models of the past such as the MP-14 and MP-29, among others. They realized that each of the most successful models in Mizuno’s past contained a layer of copper plating beneath the nickel-chrome finish. Mizuno conducted blind testing with tour professionals at the 2019 Valspar Championship, asking them to hit two different models: one with a copper layer, and one without. The model with the copper layer was universally preferred and thus implemented into the construction of the MP-20 MB irons in addition to the patented Grain Flow Forging process from 1025E mild carbon steel. Mizuno engineers also studied the most played and retained Mizuno iron models used by both contracted and non-contracted tour professionals to come up with a new muscle back design that includes a discreetly tapered top blade and cambered sole. This allows a fuller vertical spread of weight to forgive strikes high or low on the face without distorting the traditional appearance. Additionally, the topline has been reduced by 0.05mm in the 3-iron and 0.15mm in the rest of the irons (compared to MP-18).
Quotable
“We kept asking ourselves why players still talked about the feel of the older Mizuno blades -- TN-87, MP-14, MP-29, and TP-9. Despite our Grain Flow Forging process tightening up and evolving CAD process that predicts vibration patterns, we were still missing something. The one element left from the old classics was a layer of copper. After blind testing our players at the Valspar Championship, it was more than nostalgia. Our test pool universally preferred the prototype with copper plating.” -- Jeff Cook, Mizuno PGA Tour Manager
