Who’s It For?

The U500 utility iron is ideal for highly skilled golfers who prefer to play a long iron over a hybrid, but also want a little bit of forgiveness. The club features a compact shape and little offset that creates a highly attractive “players aesthetic” and promotes a high degree of versatility. The U500 is just as deadly when used to find the fairway on a tight par-4 as it is when it is required to launch a par-5 second shot high and land it softly on the green. Low-handicap golfers and more consistent ball strikers will most likely find that the U500 utility iron best fits their needs. Mid- to high-handicap golfers may prefer the wider-soled U510, which puts more emphasis on forgiveness.

The Tech Story

For the U500 utility iron, Titleist’s engineers took the wildly popular clubface of the Titleist 718 T-MB and thinned out the forged high-strength steel to just 1.9mm thick, increasing ball speed and contributing to the excellent feel. The excess weight from the thinned face was replaced with high-density tungsten, which lowered the center of gravity and created more forgiveness. Overall, tungsten weighting makes up roughly 98 grams per clubhead in the U500 options, which is about five percent more tungsten weighting than was used in the T-MB irons. The L-shaped face design wraps around the leading edge to improve performance on strikes to the lower portion of the face. The U500’s also possess a higher-MOI clubhead than the T-MB irons, resulting in more stability and balance at impact. This club found immediate success in the hands of professionals, and it will have no trouble providing an instant boost in performance for other low-handicap golfers.

Titleist U-Series Testing: U-500 vs. U-510

Brand new from Titleist are its U-Series utility irons, with two unique options available for players to choose from. Both models offer impressive ball speeds and ample forgiveness, the latter coming courtesy of more than 90 grams of tungsten that has been utilized in each design. The U-500 has the more traditional iron look of the two models and was designed for shot-making, while the U-510 features a larger profile and wider sole that was created to promote exceptional launch. To see how these two utility irons performed and how they differed in terms of look, sound, and feel, 2nd Swing master fitter Thomas Campbell and staff writer Drew Mahowald conducted Trackman testing with each. If you’re looking at adding one of these clubs to your bag, this video could provide some valuable insight to help you make the right choice.
