Callaway PM Grind 19 Tour Grey Wedge
Who’s It For?
The short answer to this question is that the PM Grind 2019 wedges are for Phil Mickelson, because that’s exactly who they are designed for. On a broader scale, these wedges are constructed for the golfer that wants to improve on three different types of shots: The Knockdown, The Hit & Check, and The “Phlop.” Mickelson worked with Callaway Club Designer Roger Cleveland, one of the most renowned wedge designers ever, to construct what they both believe is a wedge that can execute each of those three unique shots.
The Tech Story
Callaway’s PM Grind wedges have gained attention over the past few years for their unique shape, which consists of an exceptionally high toe and expansive face area with grooves stretching across the entire face. The design is ideal for the tricky short game shots in which opening the face is necessary to produce a high-launching, soft-landing trajectory. However, Mickelson and Cleveland added a number of changes to the 2019 PM Grind to improve the wedge’s effectiveness on other shots. Groove-in-Groove technology, originally introduced in the Mack Daddy 4 wedges, includes four micro-positive ridges machined into flat parts of the face, parallel to the grooves, creating 84 points of contact with the ball and forming micro-grooves between them. In the 2019 PM Grind, the micro-grooves have been built in at a 20 degree angle, making them roughly perpendicular to the target line when the face is slightly opened. Callaway’s testing results indicated that the new Groove-in-Groove technology increases spin on lob shots by 12 percent compared to the Mack Daddy PM Grind wedges. Additionally, the offset has been increased to simplify moving the ball back in the stance for a knockdown shot. The high toe pulls the CG position upward, promoting a lower trajectory while also creating more space higher on the face to benefit the open-faced shots. Also new for the 2019 PM Grind wedges is the C-Grind Sole, which provides relief at the heel and toe for smooth turf interaction and crisp contact from a variety of lies and surfaces.
