Q: How do the 718 AP1, AP2, and AP3 differ?
A: The 718 AP1, AP2, and AP3 irons from Titleist have all been built for different types of players. The AP1 model is designed for golfers in need of extra forgiveness or launch from their irons. The bigger clubhead and lower center of gravity generates better performance when contact is not made in the center of the clubface. The AP2, meanwhile, is a smaller clubhead shape that will work best for players who consistently find the center of the clubface. These irons are great for golfers looking to shape shots. The AP3 irons are a combination of the AP1 and AP2, featuring a hollow-body shape that emphasizes distance but also delivers a little bit of workability.

Q: How many irons should I have in my bag?
A: This will differ depending on the player. Most set configurations include a 4-iron through pitching wedge. However, many golfers would be better using a 4-hybrid or 5-hybrid instead of a 4-iron or 5-iron. As long as you are confident in your ability to hit any particular iron high enough to hold the green, it can stay in your bag. For most golfers, this extends to about a 4-iron or 5-iron. It’s important to note that selecting the correct shaft is not just about raw swing speed, but the swing tempo also matters just as much. In general, golfers that hit their 7-iron 150 yards or more should play a stiff shaft, while golfers that hit a 9-iron or pitching wedge 150 yards may need to consider an x-stiff flex depending on their swing tempo.
