Vokey SM7 Wedge Selection FAQ

Q: What SM7 wedges are available to me?
A: SM7 wedges are available at two-degree increments in lofts ranging from 46 to 62 degrees. Including the six gole grinds that are available, there are 23 different options to choose from in the SM7 lineup, and there are also three different finishes available: Tour Chrome, Brushed Steel, and Jet Black.

Q: How many wedges should I carry in my bag?
A: Including a pitching wedge, most players will carry three or four wedges to ensure that they have what they need to play any type of shot from 125 yards and in. The exact number that you choose may vary based on the clubs you carry at the top end of your bag. But remember, your wedges are your scoring clubs, so it’s important to dedicate ample space in your bag to address your wedge needs.

Q: What kind of gaps in loft do I want between my wedges?
A: Ideally you want between four and six degrees of loft separation between your wedges to ensure that full shots have 10-15 yards of difference in distance. If you are able to carry four wedges in your bag, try to keep your gaps closer to four degrees, but if you only carry three wedges you might have to push that number to six degrees to address all of your needs.

Q: What is most important when it comes to picking wedges?
A: Along with proper gapping, picking the right sole grinds for your wedges is imperative. In the SM7 line, there are six sole grinds available and each was designed to suit different types of players depending on how they swing the club, what the course conditions are like where they play most often, what type of short game shots they prefer to play on the course.

Q: How do turf and sand conditions influence wedge selection?
A: Typically, when playing from softer turf and sand, or thick rough around the greens, players will fare better with more bounce, and in the SM7 lineup the D, K, and F Grinds are the higher bounce options. Conversely, less bounce often works best from firmer turf and sand, or really tight fairway lies, and the M and L Grinds are the SM7 options that offer lower bounce angles.

Q: How does a player’s angle of attack influence wedge selection?
A: As important as turf and sand conditions are when it comes to picking wedges, how a golfer delivers the club at impact is equally important. If you tend to have a steeper angle of attack and take bigger divots on full shots, playing high-bounce wedges such as the SM7 D, K, and F Grinds will benefit your game, while players who are more shallow and tend to pick the ball from the turf will likely fare better with lower-bounce options such as the M Grind and L Grind.

Q: Is there an SM7 Grind that Titleist recommends from greenside bunkers?
A: Yes. If you struggle out of the sand around the greens, Titleist would encourage you to try its K Grind, which is a high-bounce, wide-sole design that was created to help players improve their sand play. That said, if you play at a course that has extremely firm sand, the M Grind would be an excellent alternative from hard bankers or those with tightly packed sand.

Q: I find the number of sole grinds to be confusing. Is there an SM7 option that will work for most golfers?
A: While we would encourage you to match sole grinds to your game with as much detail as possible, if you’re simply looking for a versatile SM7 wedge that will work for the masses, you can’t go wrong with the S Grind. It’s a mid-bounce wedge that performs well on full shots and chips or pitches played with a straight face, but it also offers some shot-making versatility.

Q: Are there any performance differences in the three SM7 finishes?
A: Absolutely not. In fact, Titleist even cuts the SM7 grooves differently based on how each finish overlays the grooves to ensure that there are no variances in performance. At the end of the day, the three finishes were created to offer golfers different but elegant looks, and it’s up to the individual to pick the finish that suits his or her eye the best.

Q: At the end of the day, what am I looking to accomplish in a full set of wedges?
A: The answer here is simple but one that golfers often get wrong. In picking your complete set of wedges, the goal is to create as much versatility as possible. More specifically, you want each of your wedges to help you accomplish different things on the course, both in terms of how far you hit them and the shots you play with them. So make sure you do a good job in picking enough wedges, that the gapping makes sense, and that you take advantage of different grind options to be able to handle any shot or lie that you might encounter during a round.

A Closer Look At The SM7 Grind Options

F Grind: An all-purpose grind that is particularly suited for full shots and shots hit with a square face. Ideal for players who prefer a traditional wedge sole. The F Grind is the most played sand wedge on Tour. F Grind wedges are available in lofts from 46 to 56 degrees.

M Grind: Designed for players that like to rotate the clubface open and closed to manufacture shots around the green. Ideal for players with a shallower, more sweeping swing type who play shots from a variety of clubface positions. M Grind wedges are available in lofts from 54 to 62 degrees.

S Grind: Features a full sole that has been narrowed by a trailing edge grind, giving it a faster feel through the turf. The S Grind is best for neutral to firm conditions and for players that like to control loft with their hands ahead or behind the ball. S Grind wedges are available in lofts from 54 to 60 degrees.

D Grind: Blends versatility from a heel, toe, and trailing edge grind and forgiveness with its high measured bounce. The D Grind is ideal for players with a steeper angle of attack who play shots from a variety of clubface positions. D Grind wedges are available in lofts of 58 to 60 degrees.

K Grind: The highest bounce wedge in the lineup, and is the ultimate bunker club. The K Grind is a wide, full sole wedge with enhanced camber to make it forgiving from a variety of sand and turf conditions. K Grind wedges are available in lofts of 58 to 60 degrees.

L Grind: The lowest bounce grind option in the mix. The heel, toe, and trailing edge relief allow for maximum greenside versatility. The L Grind is perfect for firm conditions and designed for precise players. It is ideal for players that have complete control of impact looking for maximum shot-making versatility. L Grind wedges are available in lofts of 58 to 60 degrees.
